<p>Social media reaches hundreds of millions of people every day. Most of those people are on Facebook. According to the social networking giant, Facebook has more than 700 million users worldwide. At least half, or 300 million, of those users are actively using their Facebook account on a daily basis.</p>
<p>Facebook and social networking in general, has proven itself as more than just a fad. Social networking is a valuable tool to reaching more people than you ever could before.</p>
<p>It can be tempting to use Facebook like a big billboard, to use old school sales tactics by putting your brand in front of as many people as possible and waiting for them to turn into customers. However, Facebook is about social interaction, not mass marketing.</p>

<p>Facebook users aren’t interested in hearing a sales pitch, they’re looking to interact with their network and to stay connected. Advertising on Facebook is fine and can be very effective, but your user account or fan page should focus on social interaction. Save the sales pitch for the Ad campaign, which we’ll talk about later.</p>
<p>How does a business or brand fit into this social environment?</p>

<li><strong><em>Spark up a      Conversation</em></strong><em> </em>Who said a brand      can’t be personable? Consider the values of your company and use that to      guide your brand. The key to engaging your network is to be genuine.</li>

<p>Fan pages are public Facebook profiles for just about anything; these profiles are a place for people to connect around a particular topic, product, or company. Even if you have an individual Facebook account, you should make a fan page for your brand to establish your business as its own entity.</p>
<p>Fan pages may focus on a single product, your brand, or even the culture of your company; anything that will bring together likeminded people that are in your target audience.</p>
<p>As your page starts gaining ‘fans,’ you will be able to connect with your network.</p>

<li><strong><em>Listen more than you      talk.</em></strong> The goal is to get others talking about you and your product, you      will make better connections by listening and encouraging dialogue.</li>
<li><strong><em>Stay true to your      brand.</em></strong> Your fan page is a great opportunity for you to bring your brand      to life. A laid-back company can be informal while a large corporation      should maintain a more professional image. If you are an environmentally      minded brand, let that reflect in how you conduct yourself. Just be sure      to keep conversation relevant.</li>

<p><strong>Gaining Fans</strong></p>
<p>Now that you’ve set up a brilliant fan page and you’re ready to go, how do you gain new fans? It doesn’t help much if your only fans are your friends and family that already know you. So, how do you reach those 300 million plus users?</p>
<p>Pubic Facebook accounts for individuals can be searched by keyword. Consider the keywords your network might use in status updates and profile information. When you have found users that might be interested in your page, send them an invitation.</p>
<p>You can also network by joining other fan pages that are related to your product, try to avoid obvious competitors.</p>

<p><strong>Use Advertising Data</strong></p>
<p>Facebook keeps good records of their users and these records can help you find your network. If you are having trouble finding fans and relevant keywords, making a mock ad can give you some valuable information.</p>
<p>After making a mock ad, before you pay to run it, you can look at the ‘estimated reach’ that estimates how many users your ad would apply to. Parameters can be placed based on keywords, interests, age, and location. Try different keywords and ideas to increase your reach.</p>

<p>Mark Zuckerberg is a hot topic, and why shouldn’t he be? Zuckerberg isn’t the average 26 year old, even an average Harvard Alum, Mark Zuckerberg is the one of the founders of the world wide phenomenon, facebook.</p>
<p>What’s more amazing, Mark Zuckerberg became the founder of facebook 5 years ago, as a sophomore at Harvard. When most students were sleeping through their 8:00am lecture, Mark Zuckerberg and his co-founders were revolutionizing the internet. Today, just 5 years after he founded facebook, one in every fourteen people on the planet has an account.</p>
<p><strong>So, what makes Mark Zuckerberg different?</strong></p>
<p><span id="more-2745"></span></p>
<p>For starters, Zuckerberg started a business model based on his own personal beliefs; that the world should be “a more open place,” as he writes on his facebook page. Zuckerberg lists his interests as “openness, making things that help people connect and share what&#8217;s important to them, revolutions, information flow, minimalism.”</p>
<p><strong>Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t just sell a product, he believes in his product enough to use it.</strong> His public facebook page has a wall full of posts ranging from “Had a lot of fun on Saturday Night Live tonight!” to “I’m in India this weekend on Vacation. I’m here for a friend’s wedding.” Zuckerberg has posted pictures of backyard barbeques and fun days at the office. The facebook founder is also a user of the ‘places’ feature, showcasing his current location to all 879 of Zuckerberg’s facebook friends (I was surprised he only has 879 aren&#8217;t you?).<br />

<strong>His facebook friends even have access to his personal email address and cell phone number.</strong> Interestingly enough, as ‘open’ as Mark Zuckerberg is, he rarely talks to the press and resists public appearances. The New Yorker describes Zuckerberg’s personality as <strong>“distant and disorienting, a strange mixture of shy and cocky.”</strong> In that same interview with The New Yorker, Mark Zuckerberg describes himself as, “awkward.” In a way, Mark Zuckerberg embodies what facebook is all about. Critics of facebook’s privacy policy and even addictive nature would say that openness has gone too far. That by using facebook your personal privacy will be lost before you know it.</p>
<p>But, if you look at how Mark Zuckerberg uses his own creation, you can see that losing privacy isn’t inevitable. Zuckerberg is an active facebook user, the key is, the user still controls the information. The user decides when to put up a status, when to check in to Places, and when to not post pictures. A lot can be learned from Zuckerberg’s immediate success, he created a product that was a good fit for him. He went with what he knew.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg is, by all accounts, a high achiever with an aptitude for computers and technology. He excelled in school and attended <strong>Harvard</strong>. In college, he was the captain of the lacrosse team. In the 1990’s, when Zuckerberg was in middle school, his father began teaching him programming. As a young kid, Mark Zuckerberg became an avid programmer, always looking to learn more. In high school, he enrolled in graduate level programming classes at a local college.</p>
<p>His mother, a psychiatrist, and his father, a dentist, both encouraged him to branch out into the programming world. Zuckerberg’s father even let him design a computer system for his dental practice when he was in high school.</p>
<p>Through his recent interviews, it appears that Mark Zuckerberg is driven by a genuine passion for computer programming. While that may not sound romantic to some, the lesson is, if you can combine your talents with your passions, you can create something great. He isn’t just a smart kid, Mark Zuckerberg sees the world in a different way and facebook is what has come from that. Facebook didn’t make Mark Zuckerberg, facebook is what Mark Zuckerberg is and always has been, all about. The founder of this social networking phenomenon is the example of what hard work, passion, and talent, can create.</p>

<p>I get very excited when Facebook reveals new improvements to it&#8217;s platform.</p>
<p>There are times where I think What?!? Why!?! Why would they change that?</p>

<p>I would assume a $50 billion dollar company would most likely do their research and have people and businesses on Facebook in their best interest. This gets me to calm down a bit.</p>
<p>Today they revealed a new Facebook Pages Layout. In <span style="color: #800000;"><strong>RED</strong></span> are the visible changes.</p>
